Gilbert was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.  Gilbert's father was Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud De Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert De Clare and Isabella Marshall; his maternal grandparents were John De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Bevis, Robert, Benedict, Isabel, Maud, Margaret, Rose Agnes and Eglentina.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 56 on December 7th, 1299.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1299 in Tewksbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, England.


Gilbert's first family with Alice De Lusignan

‌Gilbert and Alice were married in a religious ceremony in 1253.  They had two daughters named Isabel and Joan.


Gilbert's second family with Joan Plantagenet

‌Gilbert and Joan were married in a religious ceremony on April 30th, 1290.  They had three daughters named Alianor, Margaret and Elizabeth.
