Gilbert was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England. Gilbert's father was Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud De Lacy. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert De Clare and Isabella Marshall; his maternal grandparents were John De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Bevis, Robert, Benedict, Isabel, Maud, Margaret, Rose Agnes and Eglentina. He was the second oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 56 on December 7th, 1299. He was buried on December 22nd, 1299 in Tewksbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, England.General Notes
