His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Fitzrichard De Clare and Adelaide De Clermont; his maternal grandparents were Ranulph III De Briquessart De Meschines and Lucia of Mercia. He had a sister named Adelize. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Roger and Isabel. ". He married (ca. 1150), Maud De St. Hilary (1132-24 Dec 1193), daught
er of James De St. Hilary and Aveline. Fathered seven children.
