Joan was born after 1247.  Joan's father was William de Valence and her mother was Johanna de Munchesni.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh X Lusignan le Brun de la Marche and Isabella de Taillefer of Angouleme; her maternal grandparents were Warin II de Munchesni and Joane (Johanna) Marshal. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, William le Jeune, Aymer, Agnes, Margaret and Isabel.  She is the second oldest of the seven children.

‌Joan and John the Red were married in a religious ceremony before 1291.  They had a son and three daughters, named John IV, Daughter Red, Elizabeth and Joan.
