Robert was born about 1239 in Derby, Lincolnshire, England.  Robert's father was William III de Ferrers and his mother was Margaret de Quincy.  His paternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers and Agnes de Keveliock of Chester; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy and Helen MacDonald de Galloway. He had a brother and four sisters, named William IV, Agnes, Margaret (Joane), Berta and Elizabeth. He had seven half-sisters named Alianore, Agnes, Isabel, Jean, Sybil, Agatha and Maud.  He died in 1279.
