Robert William was born in 1871 in Emerald Hill. Robert William's father was Peter Robert CHALLEN and his mother was Florence Sharp PEARSON.  His paternal grandparents were Charles William CHALLEN and Jane MERRETT. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Matthew Bradbury, Ernest Blandforth, Richard Linton, Arthur Browning, Oliver Leopold, Benjamin Milton, Florence Elizabeth, Alice Maud, Grace, Emily Jane, Lucy Matilda and Daisy Eunice.  He was the oldest of the thirteen children.
