Emily Jane was born in 1880 in South Yarra. Emily Jane's father was Peter Robert CHALLEN and her mother was Florence Sharp PEARSON.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles William CHALLEN and Jane MERRETT. She had seven brothers and five sisters, named Robert William, Matthew Bradbury, Ernest Blandforth, Richard Linton, Arthur Browning, Oliver Leopold, Benjamin Milton, Florence Elizabeth, Alice Maud, Grace, Lucy Matilda and Daisy Eunice.  She was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.
