Violet's father was Edmund John Wood and her mother was Agnes Douglas Kinnear. Her paternal grandparents were Abraham Wood and Sarah Eddowes. She had a brother and six sisters, named Edmund, Agnes, Sarah, Elizabeth, Daisy, Martha and Elsie. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
