Harry's father was Robert Thorpe and his mother was Nancy Mather. His maternal grandparents were Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and Alice Brooks. He had four brothers and a sister, named Walter, Edward, Nathaniel, William and Alice. He was the fifth oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 2 in May 1872 in Rhodes (nr. Middleton). His burial was on May 25th, 1872 at St. Leonard (Middleton).³
