Edward was born in April 1862 in Middleton and his baptism took place on April 27th, 1862 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1 2  Edward's father was Robert Thorpe and his mother was Nancy Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and Alice Brooks. He had four brothers and a sister, named Walter, Nathaniel, Harry, William and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died as an infant at 1 months old in May 1862 in Middleton.  He was buried on May 10th, 1862 at St. Leonard (Middleton).3 1
