Robert's father was Richard Sherlock and his mother was Lily Whitehead. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Richard, William, Thomas, Donald, Lily, Mary, Lydia and Dorothy. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 46 in January 1953 in Birkenhead.³
