Donald's father was Richard Sherlock and his mother was Lily Whitehead. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, William, Thomas, Lily, Mary, Lydia and Dorothy. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 2 in October 1923 in Birkenhead.²
