Mary's father was Richard Sherlock and her mother was Lily Whitehead. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Richard, William, Thomas, Donald, Lily, Lydia and Dorothy. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
