Alfred's father was Thomas Rigby and his mother was Betty Mather. His maternal grandparents were <unknown> and Mary Mather. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Joseph, Thomas, Alice, Mary, Alice, Sarah and Catherine. He was the third youngest of the nine children.
