John's father was Thomas Pennington and his mother was Martha Mather. His maternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Elizabeth Roper. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Louisa and Lilly. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Mary. He died at the age of 3 in 1863 in Bolton.¹
