Herbert's father was Rev William Nield and his mother was Martha Buckley. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Buckley and Patience (Patricia) Oldham. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Arthur, John, Patience, Annie, Emma and Beatrice. He was the youngest of the eight children.
