Alexander was born in June 1917 in Birkenhead.¹

Birth Notes

Alexander's father was Herbert Dutton Mercer and his mother was Mary Moutray. His paternal grandparents were John Robert Mercer and Emily Anne Herring. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Henry, John, Gerald, Herbert, Mona, Alice, Eileen, Emily and Dorothy. He was the youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 46 in 1963.
