Herbert was born in 1874 in Birkenhead and his baptism took place on March 7th, 1875 at St. John (Birkenhead).1 2  Herbert's father was John Robert Mercer and his mother was Emily Anne Herring.  His paternal grandparents were George Mercer and Mary Dutton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Douglas, Sidney, Ernest, William, Lil, Florence and Eda.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 71 in September 1945 in Birkenhead.2
