Ernest's father was John Robert Mercer and his mother was Emily Anne Herring. His paternal grandparents were George Mercer and Mary Dutton. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Herbert, Douglas, Sidney, William, Lil, Florence and Eda. He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
