John's father was George Mercer and his mother was Mary Dutton. His paternal grandparents were Charles Forbes Mercer and Hannah Hallen; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Dutton and Mary Ellison. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, William, Joseph, Thomas, Hannah and Sarah. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 70 in March 1921 in Birkenhead.²
