Joseph was born on July 18th, 1859 in Liverpool and his baptism took place on October 23rd, 1859 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1 2  Joseph's father was George Mercer and his mother was Mary Dutton.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Forbes Mercer and Hannah Hallen; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Dutton and Mary Ellison. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, George, William, Thomas, Hannah and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 23 on December 27th, 1882 in Pendlebury.  He was buried on December 30th, 1882 in Pendlebury.1 1

‌Joseph and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony on August 2nd, 1882 at St. Oswalds (Collyhurst).1   There are no children.
