William was born in May 1836 in Billinge and his baptism took place on May 15th, 1836 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1 2  William's father was John Mather and his mother was Sarah Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Houghton. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, James, James, John, Elizabeth, Maragret, Sarah and Mary.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
