James was born in September 1832 in Billinge and his baptism took place on September 24th, 1832 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Sarah Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Houghton. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, James, William, John, Elizabeth, Maragret, Sarah and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
