Thomas was born in April 1881 in Turton and his baptism took place on June 5th, 1881 at Christ Church, Walmsley.1 2  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Naylor.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Ernest, John, Charles, James, John and Annie.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died as an infant at 10 months old in February 1882 in Turton.  He was buried on February 9th, 1882 at Christ Church, Walmsley.3 1
