John's father was John Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Naylor. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. She had six brothers and a sister, named Arthur, Thomas, Ernest, John, Charles, James and Annie. She was the oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 1 in 1876 in Turton.¹
