Ruth's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Marsden. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Rachel Hamer. She had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Simon, Luke, Joseph, John, Betty, Sophia, Sarah and Esther. She was the seventh oldest of the ten children. She had a half-brother named Isaac.
