Rose was born in September 1881 in Adlington and her baptism took place on July 31st, 1881 at Christ Church (Adlington).1 2  Rose's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Hugh, Charles, Mary, Alice, Betsy, Ellen, Martha and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
