Ellen was born in 1874 in Adlington and her baptism took place on May 17th, 1874 at Christ Church (Adlington).1 2  Ellen's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Hugh, Charles, Mary, Alice, Betsy, Martha, Rose and Margaret.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
