Hugh was born in April 1870 in Heath Charnock and his baptism took place on May 30th, 1870 at Christ Church (Adlington).1 2  Hugh's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Charles, Mary, Alice, Betsy, Ellen, Martha, Rose and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 33 on August 16th, 1903 in Adlington.3
