Martha was born in June 1876 in Adlington and her baptism took place on July 30th, 1876 at Christ Church (Adlington).1 2  Martha's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Hugh, Charles, Mary, Alice, Betsy, Ellen, Rose and Margaret.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 1 in April 1878 in Adlington.3
