Charles was born in June 1878 in Adlington and his baptism took place on June 30th, 1878 at Christ Church (Adlington).1 2  Charles' father was Edward Mather and his mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Hugh, Mary, Alice, Betsy, Ellen, Martha, Rose and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
