Betsy's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Jane Norris.  Nathan Mather and Catherine Bibby were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Hugh, Charles, Mary, Alice, Ellen, Martha, Rose and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 30 in January 1903 in Adlington.³
