Robert's father was Alfred Mather and his mother was Esther Ramwell Bleakley.  His paternal grandparents were Miles Mather and Betsy Jane Tonge. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Walter, Thomas, Florence and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died as an infant at the age of 1 in June 1910 in Horwich.
