Robert's father was Wilfred (Wilfredo) Mather and his mother was Mary Alice Hardman. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Greenhalgh. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Hilda. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 26 in December 1941 in Farnworth.²
