Robert's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Dorothy Magson. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named John, Robert, Joseph, Henry, Henry, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Nancy and Jenny.  He was the fourth oldest of the thirteen children.  He died in 1789.
