Joseph was born in January 1793 in Bedford (Leigh) and his baptism took place on January 26th, 1793 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Joseph's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Dorothy Magson. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named John, Robert, Robert, Henry, Henry, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Nancy and Jenny.  He was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.
