Ellen was born in April 1798 in Bedford (Leigh) and her baptism took place on April 29th, 1798 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Ellen's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Dorothy Magson. She had six brothers and six sisters, named John, Robert, Robert, Joseph, Henry, Henry, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ann, Nancy and Jenny.  She was the tenth oldest of the thirteen children.
