Jenny was born in February 1809 in Bedford (Leigh) and her baptism took place on February 18th, 1809 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Jenny's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Dorothy Magson. She had six brothers and six sisters, named John, Robert, Robert, Joseph, Henry, Henry, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ellen, Ann and Nancy.  She was the youngest of the thirteen children.
