John was born in August 1787 in Rillington and his baptism took place there on August 4th, 1787.1  John's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Dorothy Magson. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named Robert, Robert, Joseph, Henry, Henry, Elizabeth, Alice, Mary, Ellen, Ann, Nancy and Jenny.  He was the third oldest of the thirteen children.
