Mary was born in December 1838 in Quarlton.1  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Mary Rostron.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Richard, Alice, Sarah, Martha, Martha and Jane.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
