John was born in 1826 in Edgworth and his baptism took place on July 23rd, 1826 at St. Anne (Turton) conducted by Curate James Spencer.1  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Mary Rostron.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had a brother and six sisters, named Richard, Alice, Sarah, Martha, Mary, Martha and Jane.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
