Jonathan was born in December 1826 in Withnell and his baptism took place on January 28th, 1827 in Brinscall-in-Wheelton.1  Jonathan's father was James Mather and his mother was Nanny (Ann) Miner.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, James, Peggy, Hannah, Esther, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
