Esther's father was James Mather and her mother was Nanny (Ann) Miner.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Jonathan, Peggy, Hannah, Ann and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
