James was born in 1823 in Brindle and his baptism took place on November 22nd, 1823 in Brinscall-in-Wheelton.1 2  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Nanny (Ann) Miner.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Jonathan, Peggy, Hannah, Esther, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
