John Mather

John was born in 1782 in Atherton and his baptism took place there on August 18th, 1782.¹²

John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Hatton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, Thomas, Mary, William, Peggy and Ellen. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 69 in March 1851 in Tyldesley. His burial was on March 13th, 1851 at Peel Chapel.³

- There is also a John Mather, Machine maker who married Ann Thomason
  
  John was quite old when he married Elizabeth (probably Elizabeth Wild in 1828). Before then he was probably married to Ann, who died in Atherton in 1819, aged 29.
  
  1833-1837, John was a weaver at Tyldesley when MaryAnn, Sarah and Phoebe were baptised.
  
  In 1841, John and Elizabeth (56 & 40) were at Mop Row, Tyldesley with their three daughters Mary Ann (8), Sarah (6) and Phoebe (4).
  
  John died between 1841 and 1851
  
  In 1852-53, John must have been relatively prosperous as his daughters Sarah and Mary Ann both married by certificate at Tyldesley (recording their father John Mather as deceased).
