William was born in 1792 in Atherton and his baptism took place on April 8th, 1792 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton). William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Hatton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, John, Thomas, Mary, Peggy and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
