Ellen was born in May 1784 in Atherton and her baptism took place on May 2nd, 1784 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1  Ellen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Hatton. She had six brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas, John, Thomas, Mary, William and Peggy.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
