John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Holt.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Thomas, Alice and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 37 in June 1847 in Blackrod.  He was buried on June 10th, 1847 at St. Katherine (B'rod).²
