Alice was born in April 1815 in Blackrod and her baptism took place on April 23rd, 1815 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  Alice's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Holt.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Henry, Thomas and Hannah.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
