James was born on April 1st, 1801 in Blackrod and his baptism took place on April 26th, 1801 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Entwistle.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Betty Bromiley. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Nathan, John, George, Isaac, Mary, Betty and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 29 in August 1830 in Blackrod.  He was buried on August 15th, 1830 at St. Katherine (B'rod).2

‌James and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on October 31st, 1825 at St. Peter's (Bolton).  They had two sons and a daughter, named George, John and Ann.
