Charles was born in 1826 in Bolton and his baptism took place on March 26th, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Charles' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Margaret Tyldsley.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Alice Lever. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Mary, Nancy, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 57 in December 1883 in Bolton.
